Red Cloud was a prominent chief of the Lakota Sioux in the nineteenth century. He led the most successful war an Indian nation ever waged against the United States-- resulting in it guaranteeing the Lakota ownership and sole hunting rights of present-day Western South Dakota, as well as large parts of Wyoming and Montana through the Fort Laramie Treaty. The peace was short lived; Red Cloud and the rest of the Lakota were eventually forced onto reservations. From there, Red Cloud continued to fight politically for his peoples' freedom until his death at ninety.

This was a personal project that I did in my spare time over about six months. I thought his face had a lot of character, and my goal was to capture that. All textures are hand painted in Photoshop, including the displacement map on the face. It was rendered in eight layers and composited in Photoshop.
